Call to Worship  —   (Inspired by Psalm 104)

One:  Today we gather to worship, with all our hopes, weariness, joys, and concerns swirling within us. We gather to worship One who both ascends above our condition and descends to meet us in the midst of them.

Many:  Bless the Holy One, O my soul. O Creator, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.

One:  We are humbled and grateful that the Majestic God knows our names and seeks our presence.

Many: Bless the Holy One, O my soul. O Creator, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.

One:  We raise our spirits as one body, strengthening, fortifying, and encouraging one another as we honor The Holy One’s glorious and precious name.

Many:  Bless the Holy One, O my soul. O Creator, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.

Opening Hymn      “Bless the Lord, My Soul and Being! (Psalm 104)”   Hymnal #34

1)  Bless the Lord, my soul and being! Lord my God, you have such might.

Cloaked with honor, grand and glorious, you are clothed with purest light.

Stretching out the heavens like tent cloth, you are chambered on the deep.

Riding on the wings of windstorm, flame and fire your bidding keep.

2) Lord, you laid the earth’s foundation that it would be always sound.

By the word of your commanding, you set forth each ocean’s bound.

Springs gush forth at your own bidding, giving drink to every field.

Bird and beast and all your creatures in that coolness find thirst healed.

3)  Grass you cause to grow for cattle, plants for us to cultivate.

Food you bring forth from our labor, wine for joy and bread for plate.

Trees you give the birds for shelter, mountain rock and cave for beast.

Sun and moon both mark the seasons; in their light we work and feast.

4)  Lord, how great are all your workings; wisdom marks them through and through.

All the earth is your possession; great and small belong to you.

Food you give in each due season; at your hand come all good things.

By your Spirit you create us; Lord, your breath renewal brings.

5)  May your glory reign forever.  Lord, rejoice in all you make!

As you look on your creation, mountains smoke, foundations shake.

May these words and thoughts be pleasing, for in you my joy is found.

Bless the Lord, my soul and being!  With this song let praise abound.

Scripture Lesson                           Mark 10:35-45

Sermon                    “Just the Right Size”                       Dr. Keith Ray

Thoughts to ponder:  Dorothy Day was a woman who had great compassion for others.

She was active in the mid-1900s in New York City and started something called The Catholic Worker Movement, a movement that sought to reach out to the city’s poor.

She was concerned for the least of people, even to the point where some in the government called her too radical.  She had an active file with the FBI.  How did she get to be so radical? Let’s talk about it together.

Joys and Concerns

Prayers of the People

Closing Hymn and Offertory               “Together We Serve”        Hymnal #767

1)  Together we serve, united by love,

inviting God’s world to the glorious feast.

We work and we pray through sorrow and joy,

extending God’s love to the last and the least.

2)  We seek to become a beacon of hope,

a lamp for the heart and a light for the feet.

We learn, year by year, to let love shine through

until we see Christ in each person we meet.

3)  We welcome the scarred, the wealthy, the poor,

the busy, the lonely, and all who need care.

We offer a home to those who will come,

our hands quick to help, our hearts ready to dare.

4)  Together, by grace, we witness and work,

remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong.

Together we serve in Spirit and truth,

remembering love is the strength of our song.

Benediction

Sarah Shumpert, AIM Board member, shares this update about the AIM Food Pantry: given the increased need in the community, AIM has increased the number of food boxes distributed to 55 per day (this is up from around 35 per day prior to COVID).  The increase in distribution means that the pantry empties much faster than it used to.  Please keep that in mind as you bring in food items. Also, the pantry is completely out of peanut butter and they would love to restock this item!
