Call to Worship

From the rising of the sun to its setting

God speaks to us and summons us.

God gathers us in covenant,

God’s glory shines forth.

Let us worship God!

Opening Hymn               “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”      Hymnal #611

1)  Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

2)  All thy works with joy surround thee; earth and heaven reflect thy rays;

stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,

chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

3)  Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began.

Love divine is reigning o’er us, joining all in heaven’s plan.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife.

Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Scripture Lesson       Mark 9:2-9

Sermon                 “Six Days Later”                 Dr. Keith Ray

Thoughts to ponder: The story of the Transfiguration of Jesus reveals a mystical nature of Jesus. Yet it comes just six days after Jesus announced that suffering was a part of his ministry. I wonder how we, in a period of great suffering, can claim some mystical hope for our future. Let’s consider it in worship.

Prayers of the People

Closing Hymn and Offertory   Hymnal #191

         “We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding”

1)  We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place,

where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace.

Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain,

searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain.

2)  Light breaks through our clouds and shadows;

splendor bathes the flesh-joined Word;

Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard.

Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the law and prophets meet:

Christ, with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete.

3)  Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest our faith decline,

we like Peter find it tempting to remain and build a shrine.

But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess,

that our daily lives may prove us people of the God we bless.

Shalom       (“May you be well and whole and in communion with all creation.”)

                          Shalom, my friends, Shalom, my friends, Shalom, Shalom.

                            Till we meet again, Till we meet again, Shalom, Shalom.
