Call to Worship (Inspired by Psalm 146)
One: From generation to generation, the Holy One has loved justice and righteousness, lifted the broken and bowed, and opened possibilities for the dejected.
Many: Help, hope, and happiness are of the Holy One, who reigns forever. Trust the Holy One!
One: When the power brokers, corrupt systems, and tools of violence have failed us, the Holy One has remained faithful to abiding love and abundant liberation.
Many: Help, hope, and happiness are of the Holy One, who reigns forever. Follow the Holy One!
One: Praise the Holy One with song and dance, in spirit and in truth, for God’s glory and for life abundantly!
Many: Help, hope, and happiness are of the Holy One, who reigns forever. Praise the Holy One!
Opening Hymn “Morning Has Broken” Hymnal #664
Words by Eleanor Farjeon; Music is a Gaelic melody
1) Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh
from the Word!
2) Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass.
3) Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation; praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new day!
Scripture Lesson Mark 12:38-44
Sermon “The Preferential Poor” Dr. Keith Ray
Thoughts to ponder: Jesus is often found lifting up the poor people as examples. In Luke’s gospel, he goes so far to say: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God” [Luke 6]. Surely Jesus is not a fan of poverty. So why does he not say, “There should be no poverty” instead of lifting up a poor widow woman as an example in today’s text?
Let’s consider this question together.

1) Let us sing this song for the *turning* of the world,
That we may *turn* as one. With ev‘ry voice, with ev’ry song,
we will move this world along and our lives will feel the echoes of our *turning*
With ev’ry voice, with ev’ry song! We will move this world along.
With ev’ry voice, with ev’ry song, we will move this world along
and our lives will feel the echoes of our *turning*.
2) Substitute *healing* for *turning*.
3) Substitute *loving* for *turning*.

Sarah Shumpert, AIM Board member, shares this update about the AIM Food Pantry: given the increased need in the community, AIM has increased the number of food boxes distributed to 55 per day (this is up from around 35 per day prior to COVID). The increase in distribution means that the pantry empties much faster than before. Please keep that in mind as you bring in food items. Also, the pantry is completely out of peanut butter and they would love to restock this item!

You may have noticed the new glass “tip jar” on the piano at church that serendipitously came about when someone didn’t claim a flower vase. Feel free to drop in a dollar or five when you like the music during the service. Dave and Polly will donate the “tips” to a cause related to music, such as bringing music to schools.
