Call to Worship
One: Today, we are grateful to gather and worship God in peaceful conditions.
All: While some congregations are rocked with bombshells, our service can exist in calm.
One: While some communities are rife with discord, our neighborhoods are primed for dialogue.
All: We are provoked to bring God’s peace and praise wherever we go.
One: We hold fast to the vision of Shalom throughout all of God’s creation.
All: We believe that peace is possible.
Opening Hymn “God We Praise You for the Morning” Handout
Words by Jim and Jean Strathdee; Music by Jim Strathdee
1985. Desert Flower Music. All Rights Reserved.
1) God we praise you for the morning, Hope springs forth with each new day,
New beginnings, prayer and promise, Joy in work and in play.
2) God we praise you for creation, Mountains, seas, and desert land.
Waking souls find joy and healing, In your bountiful hand.
3) God we praise you for compassion, All the loving that you show.
Human touching, tears and laughter help your children to grow.
4) God we praise you for your Spirit, Comforter and daily friend,
Restless searcher, gentle teacher, Strength and courage you send.
5) God we praise you for the Savior, Come that we may know your ways.
In his loving, dying, rising Christ is Lord of our days.
6) Alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia! Christ is Lord of our days.
Scripture Lesson Luke: 19:41-44
Sermon “People of Peace?” Dr. Keith Ray
Thoughts to Ponder: Our world is in such a state of unrest – from the natural environment crisis to human conflicts and the upcoming elections. How can we have an impact on the state of things? Where is the hope? It’s easy to have a sense of never being satisfied with what’s currently being accomplished. And that evolves into thinking why bother trying?
Let’s discuss our vocation as peacemaking in the world today.
Prayers of the People
Closing Hymn and Offertory “Let There Be Peace on Earth” Handout
By Sy Miller and Jill Jackson
Jan Lee Music. Used by generous permission.
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me;
Let there be peace on earth, The peace that was meant to be.
With hands joined together; One community,
Let us walk with each other, in perfect harmony
Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now.
With every step I take, Let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally,
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
Benediction
Discussion
Shalom (“May you be well and whole and in communion with all creation.”)
Shalom, my friends, Shalom, my friends, Shalom, Shalom.
Till we meet again, Till we meet again, Shalom, Shalom.
