Call to Worship

Leader: Because the daily pressure of life weighs heavy on our minds, on our bodies, and on our spirits.

All: We need a time of sabbath rest.

Leader: Because the stresses of our culture often leave us feeling burdened and looking for hope.

All: We need a time of sabbath rest.

Leader: Because rest, fun, leisure, and naps help us cope and feel refreshed.

All: We need a time of sabbath rest.

Leader: Because we think more clearly, love more freely, and share more joyfully when we are well rested.

All: We need a time of sabbath rest.

All: Giver of Life, help us recognize when we need to stop and care for ourselves. Allow us to enjoy a sabbath as often as we need one.  Allow us to rest without guilt so that we may work with more joy.  We are thankful for the gift of sabbath rest.  Amen.

Opening Hymn          “Love the Lord Your God”    Hymnal #62           Words and Music by Jim and Jean Strathdee

Love the Lord your God with all your heart.

Love the Lord your God with all your soul.

Love the Lord your God with all your mind.

Love the Lord your God with all that you are.

Scripture Lesson Mark 2:23—3:6

Message        “What to do With the Sabbath” Dr. Keith Ray

Thoughts to ponder: I grew up in a community where work on Sunday was frowned upon. Jesus gets in trouble in today’s scripture lesson for breaking Sabbath.

What are we to make of the ancient Sabbath laws in our day and time, where we are in constant communication via iPhones and such?

Let’s consider if and how the Sabbath is a gift for us.

Prayers of the People

Closing Hymn and Offertory        “Come and Find the Quiet Center”            Handout

Words by Shirley Erena Murray; Music attributed to B.F. White;   Harmony by Ronald A. Nelson; Descant by Charles H. Webb.

Words: 1992. Hope Publishing Co.; Harmony: 1978. Lutheran Book of Worship;

1)  Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead,

find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed:

Clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes that we can see

all the things that really matter, be at peace, and simply be.

2)  Silence is a friend who claims us, cools the heat and slows the pace,

God it is who speaks and names us, knows our being, touches base,

making space within our thinking, lifting shades to show the sun,

raising courage when we’re shrinking, finding scope for faith begun.

3)  In the Spirit let us travel, open to each other’s pain,

let our loves and fears unravel, celebrate the space we gain:

There’s a place for deepest dreaming, there’s a time for heart to care,

in the Spirit’s lively scheming there is always room to spare.

Benediction

Shalom, my friends, Shalom, my friends, Shalom, Shalom.

Till we meet again, Till we meet again, Shalom, Shalom.
