Call to Worship  (adapted from Psalm 145)

Leader:  The Holy One is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

People:  The Holy One is good to all, with compassion for all God’s creation.

Leader:  The Holy One upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.

People:  The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.

Leader:  You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing.

People:  The Holy One is just in all ways and always kind.

Leader:  The Holy One is near to all who call on God, to all who call in truth.

People:  The Holy One fulfills the desire of all who are in fear and also hears their cry and saves them.

Leader:  The Holy One watches over all who love the Divine Presence.

All:  My mouth will speak the praise of the Holy One, and all flesh will bless God’s holy name forever and ever.

Opening Hymn   “Your Faithfulness, O Lord, Is Sure”         Hymnal #42

1) Your faithfulness, O Lord, is sure in all your words, your gracious deeds;

you gently lift all burdened souls and well provide for all our needs.

2) The eyes of all are fixed on you; by you their wants are all supplied;

your open hand is bountiful and every soul is satisfied.

3) Lord, you are just in all your ways, and kind in everything you do;

forever near you stand to hear and help all those who call on you.

4) My mouth shall speak your praise, O Lord; my soul shall bless your holy name;

let all things living join the song of praise, from age to age the same.

Scripture Genesis 32:22-31

Sermon        “A Wrestling Match” Dr. Keith Ray

Theme:  The portraits of the Divine in the Bible are varied, including the notion that to live a life of spiritual discernment includes periods of restlessness and wrestling with Truth. Here’s a question to ponder today:  What does it mean to wrestle with God?

Prayers of the People

Closing Hymn/Offertory     “You Shall Go Out with Joy”   Hymnal #80

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace;

the mountains and the hills will break forth before you;

there’ll be shouts of joy, and all the trees of the field will clap,

will clap their hands.

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands;

the trees of the field will clap their hands;

the trees of the field will clap their hands while you go out with joy.

Benediction
